Director of Engineering – Shopify
Our client is looking for a Director of Engineering to own Shopify as a core commercial platform, connecting the storefront with subscriptions, marketing, fulfillment, operations, inventory, and financial systems. This highly visible role combines deep technical ownership with engineering leadership and business strategy, partnering across the organization to ensure the platform and its surrounding ecosystem support growth, operational efficiency, customer experience, and overall business performance.

Compensation: This job is expected to pay about $185,000 – $220,000 annual base salary

What You’ll Do:
- Own the Shopify and Shopify Plus platform end to end, including catalog and product architecture, Shopify Admin, store configuration, checkout, markets, applications, subscriptions, themes, and the broader commerce technology ecosystem.
- Remain hands-on with the platform while leading engineering and QA, reviewing code and PRs, troubleshooting production issues, guiding Liquid/theme development, setting technical standards, and stepping into development or configuration work when needed.
- Architect, maintain, and evolve the integrations and data flows connecting Shopify with subscriptions, fulfillment, shipping, inventory, CRM, marketing, customer support, and financial systems, including APIs, webhooks, order and transaction data, and order-to-cash workflows.
- Partner directly with Product, Marketing, Growth, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, and other business teams to translate commercial needs into scalable technical solutions and connect platform decisions to revenue, conversion, retention, AOV, LTV, margin, fulfillment costs, and customer experience.
- Set the technical strategy and roadmap for the commerce platform, balancing hands-on execution with engineering leadership, capacity planning, platform reliability, third-party application management, and scalable solutions that support continued business growth.
What Gets You the Job:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 4+ years of deep, hands-on Shopify and Shopify Plus experience across Shopify Admin, catalog/product architecture, store configuration, checkout, apps, APIs, webhooks, integrations, and the broader Shopify ecosystem.
- In-house D2C e-commerce experience within a consumer packaged goods (CPG) organization is required, ideally within a startup or growth-stage environment with annual revenue of approximately $500M or less.
- Strong Liquid and Shopify theme expertise with the ability to understand and review code, troubleshoot issues, guide development, and personally work within the platform when needed.
- Strong e-commerce business acumen with experience across commerce systems such as subscriptions, fulfillment, inventory, logistics, CRM/marketing, and finance, along with an understanding of how technology decisions impact revenue, conversion, retention, margin, customer experience, and overall business performance.
- Proven engineering leadership experience with the ability to lead engineers and QA, manage roadmap and capacity, set technical standards, partner with executive and cross-functional stakeholders, and remain close enough to the technology to drive solutions directly.
- Experience with subscription-based commerce and Recharge is highly preferred. Familiarity with modern AI-assisted development tools and practices is also a plus.
